Model Performance video (not active) All Tracks: Jam Track (not active)

The guitar in this video makes use of chords with added tension notes.
The D7 chord adds a 9th note, E. As you play the chord, let your ear pick out which note acts as the tension note.
In the same way, listen for the tension note that appears in the E7 chord.

Work on control over note dynamics and note value (i.e., the duration of notes), paying attention to the symbols for staccato and tenuto in the musical notation. This control will greatly affect the groove set down by the guitar.

The rhythmic style you see in the video is one you'll recognize from a wide range of musical styles, particularly funk. It creates a percussive sound through coordination of right-hand strokes with left-hand muting of strings. This rhythmic technique may lack a specific name other than "funk rhythm guitar*", but whatever the label, it'll add a great dynamic quality to your rhythm guitar playing in genres from blues to funk to beyond.

(* Musicians in Japan call this technique "cutting", for its sharp right-hand strumming and choppy muted sounds.)
