Outline: Try some simple chord phrases!

In addition to the previous lesson, try three different rhythms for a G - Em chord progression. This also gives you a chance to practice reading rhythm notation. We recommend trying it by yourself first to see if you are reading it correctly before watching the Model Performance in the video clips.

In this model performance, only the root note (the note upon which a chord is based) is played for the eighth notes; the higher strings (the ones higher than the string with the chord’s root) are played for the sixteenth notes. These are commonly-used techniques. Practice them while listening out for the difference.

Have your own goal in mind!

If you're not used to playing chords...
Having fun is the most important thing.

If you aren't used to forming chords yet, it may not sound clear at first. Ignore small mistakes for now and concentrate on the fun of playing the two chords with the rhythm.

Just have fun!

Once you are used to forming chords...
Practice them with a metronome, paying close attention to the rhythm.
Record yourself playing, even if it's a hassle; listening to yourself will greatly help your progress.

When you are comfortable playing chords...
Practice them while making sure that "each string has a clear sound" and "you like the way your playing sounds".
